New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC)

Project: Harlem Hospital, Mural Patient Pavilion

DASNY’s Role: Construction managed by DASNY ($265 million).

Details: The project included extensive site work, parking modifications, new operating rooms and emergency department, new intensive and critical care units, and demolition of the out-patient building and nurses residence building, as well as renovation work to both the Ron Brown Building and Martin Luther King Jr. Building.

Impact: A spectacular 429-pane back-lit curtain wall recreates images from a Works Progress Administration-era Vertis Hayes Mural as the signature piece for the $195,000 gross square foot patient pavilion, which received an Honor Award from the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
