BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Binghamton University's school colors, green and white, are fitting with the school's latest accolade.
BU receives national recognition for its "green" buildings on campus.
The U.S. Green Building Council awarded the school Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification, or LEED.
Two residence halls meet criteria for LEED, a nationally recognized standard for designing and operating energy-efficient buildings.
BU's president Lois DeFleur says the buildings were designed to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water, and material use.
"It demonstrates to everyone the fact that you can have really beautiful and really functional buildings and at the same time make major contributions to environmental issues," said DeFleur.
BU's Cascade and Windham Halls are the first buildings in Greater Binghamton to receive the certification.
