Missing DASNY Data Tapes Found and Returned

On December 27, United Parcel Service (UPS) returned to the Dormitory Authority office in Albany the five computer backup tapes that were reported missing on December 19.  These tapes included confidential personal information of certain DASNY employees, former employees, retirees and some vendors.

UPS stated that the tapes were continuously in its possession. DASNY believes that no information has been stolen, lost or breached.

The tapes were lost in a Manhattan UPS sorting facility where they became separated from their packaging. They were later found and shipped to a UPS warehouse for missing materials in Independence, Missouri. UPS security staff in Latham was successful in searching for and identifying the tapes on Wednesday December 26.

When the tapes were delivered to DASNY headquarters on December 27, they were closely inspected by the Authority’s Information Systems staffers who verified their authenticity and determined that the data on them was intact.

The Dormitory Authority has notified its employees, appropriate state agencies and the media that the tapes have been safely returned.
