Important Information on DASNY Personal Information Loss
The Dormitory Authority has reported the recent loss of five back-up data tapes that contain the personal identifying data - - including social security numbers, addresses, date of birth, hire date, home telephone number - - of Authority employees active between June 2001 and January 1, 2006. This includes current employees and those who retired or left employment that were active during this time period. These tapes also contain certain social security or taxpayer identification number information of vendors with whom the Authority conducts business.
The Authority has no information suggesting that the tapes were stolen or that data on the tapes has been breached and compromised. The Authority and UPS continue to investigate the matter.
Current Authority employees have been notified by e-mail of this development and advised about steps they can take to safeguard themselves. Notification letters are being mailed to current and former employees, retirees and vendors. Appropriate state agencies have been notified.
The Authority ships back-up data tapes on a daily basis from its Albany headquarters to its office in Manhattan for safekeeping. The package of tapes that was shipped from Albany via UPS on Friday evening, December 14th, arrived at the Authority office in Manhattan damaged, open and empty on Tuesday, December 18th.
