SUNY Potsdam Breaks Ground for New Dorm

POTSDAM – SUNY Potsdam broke ground today on its first new construction project in 35 years – a 114-bed townhouse complex. The Dormitory Authority will provide project management services for the $7.4 million student residence.

DASNY Upstate Facilities Construction Director Pat Cinelli joined SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John A. Fallon III and other college and village officials at the ceremony on this 240-acre campus in St. Lawrence County. In a short speech, Mr. Cinelli thanked President Fallon and his staff "for having the confidence in us to oversee the design and construction of this state-of-the-art residence hall."

The townhouses are scheduled to open to upper-division students for the fall 2006 semester. Each independent unit will have a kitchen, bathroom, dining area, living room and four to five single bedrooms. The five two-story buildings that make up the complex will be located between the Maxcy Hall Athletic Complex and Knowles Hall. Mach Architecture and Engineering is the project’s design consultant.

The complex is being built in response to the changing needs of SUNY Potsdam's residential students. After a consultant’s report in 1999 identified the students’ desire for more privacy, particularly for upperclassmen, the College’s 10-year plan was developed to diversity the housing stock, which at the time was 85 percent standard double rooms.

The residence hall master plan also includes moving from suite-style housing to apartment-style housing in Lehman Hall, which has been completed, and moving from double rooms to suites in Bowman Hall, which is a future project.

In addition to Mr. Cinelli, the Dormitory Authority project team includes Chief Project Manager Timothy McGrath, Regional Project Manager James Moshier, Project Manager Christopher Cameron, Field Representative Gregory Hangac, Architect Sandra Daigler, Contract Administrator Chuck Daly and Claims Analyst John McEvilly.
