BROOKLYN Staff of the Dormitory Authority and Coney Island Hospital topped off the new eight-story patient bed tower today. The project is part of a continuing effort to modernize the hospital, which is part of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.
The $88.6 million project includes construction of the new inpatient bed tower and connecting bridges to link the addition to an existing building. An ambulatory care center will be located on the first floor, with 212 private and semi-private inpatient rooms, and related spaces for medical and office staff. The steel-framed bed tower has a façade of masonry insulated metal panels and glass curtain wall. Construction began in August 2002 and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2006.
Managing Director of Construction Douglas Van Vleck, who represented the Authority at the topping-off ceremony, heads the Dormitory Authority project team. Robert Walsh is the Authoritys Director of HHC Construction. Frank Reda is Chief Project Manager, Peter Jackson is the Project Manager, and John Barra is the Field Representative. Rana Ahmad is the Project Accountant. The Hillier Group is the project architect; Barney Skanska Construction is the construction manager.
This is the second phase of the Coney Island Hospital modernization. The Dormitory Authority has completed renovations of the ambulatory diagnostic area and establishment of a cardiac catheterization laboratory. Renovations are under way at the maternity department to add six birthing rooms, and the Authority expects that $4 million project to be completed next summer.
Founded in the late 19th century as a first-aid station to serve summer beachgoers, Coney Island Hospital was established on its current site in 1909, and has grown into a multi-site community medical center serving many ethnic neighborhoods.
The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, of which Coney Island Hospital is a part, is the nations largest system of public hospitals. In 1997, HHC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dormitory Authority, authorizing the Authority to be HHCs builder. The Authority currently has $705 million worth of construction work under way in its HHC program. Major projects completed include the new Queens Hospital Center and a new bed tower at Kings County Hospital Center.
