ONEONTA The State University of New York College at Oneonta held a groundbreaking ceremony today for its new 200-bed residence hall, with the Dormitory Authority providing financing and project management services. The $8.8 million project is scheduled for student occupancy for the fall 2004 semester.

College President Alan B. Donovan led the ceremony, which included Senator James Seward, Assemblyman William Magee, SUNY Vice Chancellor for Business and Industry Relations R. Wayne Diesel, Dormitory Authority Managing Director of Construction Douglas M. Van Vleck, College Council Chair David Brenner, and Resident Student Organization President Chad Pachtinger.

The Dormitory Authority has been a financing and construction partner of the College at Oneonta for decades. Over the past 10 years, DASNY and College officials renovated and rehabilitated all 14 of the Colleges dorms. This new project is the first new dormitory construction on campus since 1972.

In discussing the decade-long renovation project, Mr. Van Vleck noted, These improvements make better buildings, but they also acknowledge and respect the needs of todays students for more privacy and services. The dedication of the Colleges departments of Facilities, Residence Life and Administration to offer their students a quality campus community as well as top-notch academics helps make this campus special.

And now, recognizing Oneontas distinctive campus personality and its need to grow, new construction is starting, Mr. Van Vleck added. Were proud to be the Colleges construction partner, and were eager to build you a new dormitory.

Nearly 3,000 of the Colleges 5,700 students live on campus. The new dorm, near Hulbert Hall, will offer apartment-style living. Most bedrooms are designed for single occupancy, grouped in four- or six-person suites with a living room and kitchenette. Each floor will have a laundry room, and the common areas will have seminar/computer lounges, an exercise room and a student lounge with cooking facilities. Parking for 55 cars is planned. The dorm will be accessible to the handicapped.

The project architect is Joy, McCoola and Zilch Architects & Planners of Glens Falls.
