about their DASNY experiences. From the left: Layla Bahbahani,

More than 60 college students are working side by side with Dormitory Authority
professionals this summer in construction, legal proceedings, municipal finance,
accounting, human resource management and other fields.
This is the second year that the internship program has been expanded from
the Office of Construction to include all departments and functions at the
Authority. Authority Board Chair Gail H. Gordon suggested the expansion to
a general internship program open to a diverse group of individuals.
The original internship program with the City University of New York is
celebrating its 10th year. With 18 interns this year and 225 interns during
its history, this highly competitive work/study program looks for technologically
savvy CUNY students to provide them with professional construction and facility
management experience. Most of the students are entering their third year
in college as architectural or electrical, mechanical or civil engineering
majors.
The second annual intern gathering, held in Albany in July, brought together
interns in both programs to introduce DASNY functions and instruct them in
essential communication skills and personality traits needed in todays
professional working environment.
An overwhelming majority of the interns said they would consider working for
DASNY in the future. Hashim Muhammad, a returning intern who attends the University
of Buffalo, was pleasantly surprised by the internship. "DASNY has not
been afraid to get me involved in anything that was needed at the time,"
he said. "I was surprised that DASNY would give responsibility to Interns.
I worked for a state agency two summers as a Technical Construction Inspector.
I never got the kind of responsibility and training I received from DASNY."
Athene M. Borrero, a student at the Hudson Valley Community College, said,
"This internship is giving me the experience I needed to make sure that
this career was what I wanted to do in the future. It has shown me many different
activities that go on in just one day on the job site. With todays competitive
economy, I thank DASNY for giving me this experience that I needed to achieve
my dream."
Stepping above and beyond any other internship program, DASNY is giving students
an excellent opportunity to get work experience. CUNY students apply through
their campuses and are selected by CUNY in their field of interest. For more
