SUNY New Paltz Students Settle Into Esopus Hall

New Hall

Students at the State University at New Paltz have moved into Esopus Hall, a new 220-bed residence hall financed and built by the Dormitory Authority. The $13 million dorm opened to students for the fall semester. Construction took 14 months.

The dorm is designed with a variation of the standard double-loaded corridor. Instead of one large bathroom per hallway, the dorm has one bathroom for every four rooms, allowing more privacy.

Esopus Hall is an L-shaped building, with an exterior finish that combines split-face masonry blocks and an exterior insulation and finish system. All bedrooms have pained gypsum board walls. The building has full fire sprinklers throughout every room. Each room is air-conditioned as well; students control the temperature with individual heating/cooling units.

The building is designed for the computer age: Every student and office workstation has individual computer, telephone and cable television receptacles. A generator, automatically activated during power outages, is capable of supplying power to the major building systems indefinitely.

For security purposes, all interior door locks are electronically controlled by card access. The students identification card grants, or denies, them access to various room and exterior entrances.

Sweet Associates was the general contractor on the project, which was designed by the architectural firm of STV Incorporated. Vincent Pace of the Dormitory Authority staff provided on-site management of the project, supervised by Lou DAmbrosi and Daljeet Sandhu.

The name of the residence hall is from an old Indian tribe that inhabited this part of Ulster County. A second dormitory in the design phase is also named for a local tribe. Lenape Hall, with a $15 million budget, is scheduled to open to students in the spring of 2003.
